Upper Mustang Trek Map
The Upper Mustang trek follows the Kali Gandaki north from Jomsom into the former Kingdom of Lo, a dry, wind-carved landscape in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, ending at the walled town of Lo Manthang.
Key Facts
The Route
From Jomsom the trail heads up the Kali Gandaki valley to Kagbeni, where the restricted area begins. It then climbs over a series of passes through red and ochre cliffs, cave dwellings and chortens to Ghami, Tsarang and finally Lo Manthang, with its whitewashed walls, monasteries and royal palace. Many trekkers return by jeep on the road that now reaches Lo Manthang.
Because Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow, it can be trekked through the summer monsoon, when most of Nepal is wet.
Permits and Guides
Upper Mustang is a restricted area: you need a restricted area permit, issued through a registered agency for trekkers with a licensed guide, plus an Annapurna Conservation Area permit. The restricted area permit is considerably more expensive than permits for most other treks.
Where It Is
The trek lies in Mustang District. See the Nepal trekking map for other routes.
